There are two main forming methods used in general glassware manufacturing: manual blowing and machine blowing. Manual blowing, colloquially known as "blowing large bubbles," is a technique that was transmitted from Central Asia to China in the 5th century. The air bubbles produced in handblown glass are normal and exist in all handblown glass vessels, and are an important distinguishing characteristic of handblown glass versus machine-made glass vessels discernible to the naked eye.

Air is then forcibly blown through the hollow bore of the blowing iron into the molten glass gather by the glassblower's breath, causing the glass to expand. Air bubbles naturally occurring in handblown glass are a normal characteristic present across all such handcrafted glassware.
