This plant-dyed thermal glove has the appearance of having baked ten thousand loaves of bread, with a rich and rugged texture.
The outer layer of the glove is made from a piece of discontinued coarse linen-cotton fabric, woven by an old weaving mill in Yunnan. The yarn used in the fabric is decades-old and was spun in the factory using old-fashioned weaving machines, which have a much lower efficiency compared to modern high-speed weaving machines. The fabric has a coarse grain texture, evident with prominent fabric nodes, and the two types of yarn used in the fabric create different shades and levels of color in the pattern – truly embodying the look of traditional fabric. Since the supply of old yarn has been depleted, the fabric has become particularly precious. We have previously used this fabric to make shirts, plant-dyed fisherman hats, and now, we have used the remaining amount to make this glove.
The inner side of the glove that comes into contact with the hand is made from 100% cotton fabric, providing a comfortable feel. Thick cotton padding is inserted between the layers, providing heat insulation and protection against burns. The length of the glove extends beyond the wrist, ensuring it stays securely on the hand even if it is slightly smaller in size. There is a small hanging loop on one side, allowing it to be easily hung when not in use.
The glove is ambidextrous, with hand-sewn patchwork on both sides. The dense and rustic handwork, coupled with the texture differences in the fabric, is further enhanced by repeated plant dyeing and sun exposure, resulting in a highly durable and aesthetically pleasing look.
If the glove ever gets worn out, it can be repaired with a few careful stitches and some creativity, bringing about another transformation. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that this glove could be used for a lifetime, especially for a dedicated baker.
